At this point most health professionals are comfortable stating the importance of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, less red meat and avoidance of excess refined sugar. The confusion continues about high fat/low carb, meat/no meat, and these are just a few examples. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans were initiated in the 1980s, which was also when the increase in obesity prevalence initially was observed.
