The topic of epigenetics and the power of dietary intake is quite popular in the general public and academia. The ability to change our "destiny", so to speak, is alluring. However, how powerful are these nutrient interactions with our genes which alter our phenotype expression? Will your green smoothie turn back the generational hands of time? It seems the National Institute of Health (NIH) and President Obama certainly think so. This quote summarizes Obama's perspective of Precision Medicine Initiative, "If we’re born with a particular disease, or a particular genetic makeup that makes us more vulnerable to something, that’s not our destiny, that’s not our fate,” Mr. Obama said. “We can remake it. That’s who we are as Americans, and that’s the power of scientific discovery.” For a large cost, the data collection and analysis could enhance and provide a deeper understanding of gene variation and polymorphisms. This of course could change the trajectory of many lives in the United States. Take a look at the article below. What are you thoughts and beliefs about this?
